Jennifer recently hosted a vocal workshop including 120 Year 11s @ Offerton High School! Jennifer taught the group 'Shine' by Take That in two part harmony, which they went on to perform in front of the school governors later that day! The event not only gave those involved a completely new experience but also enabled them to build their confidence in a way that they wouldn't often be able to in normal every day life! A fantastic experience all round!

Band Looking For Lead Vocalist!

 'ORDINARY' LOOKING FOR LEAD VOCALIST

The band consists of 3 very talented 15-16 year old musicians ( lead & harmonies /bass and drums). They are happy to consider either male or female vocalist! Ability to play instruments such as keyboards or rythmn guitar - added bonus!

They have been getting alot of positive feedback from a number of producers, promotors and music venues.

 Past gigs include the Middleton Arena/ Stockport Guild Hall and Academy 3 and main influences are Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Blink 182 , Muse, Kings of Leon , Eminem plus many more.

Currently laying down the instrumentals for their 3 track demo CD which will be circulated around the music industry, they also have a music producer working with them.

The Ordinary rehearse once a week at either GreatImage Studios or Moulah Rouge , Stockport.

Well done to JCSS student Natalie Clark who will by playing Nancy in a local production of Oliver! early next year!

Jekyll and Hyde!

Went to see Jekyll and Hyde at the Grand Theatre in Leeds this week, where Marti Pellow achieved a fantastic interpretation of his two sided character! The cast did a fabulous job and there were some excellent singers, especially Sarah Earnshaw who played Emma. Her voice was absolutely mesmerizing, I had goosebumps! Well Done to JCSS Student Lisa Dickinson!

JCSS student Lisa Dickinson stole the show recently with her portrayal of the Baker's Wife in Sondheim's 'Into The Woods'!

With absolutely no singing experience whatsoever, Lisa came to the studio in January very nervous about fulfilling a role which was extremely vocally challenging! However through dedication and perseverence, Lisa was able to improve her vocal skills dramatically in a short space of time!

Lisa received rave reviews and got a special mention from the Director for her achievements when the production came to an end!

Well done, Lisa!

LAMDA - Gold Exam!

Currently prepping a student for their Gold LAMDA exam! The student will be singing 'Stars and The Moon' from Songs From Another World and 'In His Eyes' from Jekyll and Hyde. Both are very challenging:

'Stars and The Moon' - The melody sits at the top of the chest voice (lower voice) where it is tempting to yell to the pitches.

TREATMENT: As we all know yelling hurts and sounds flat so we are working on numerous exercises to reduce muscular tension, reduce volume and therefore create a more balanced, natural singing sound.

'In His Eyes' - The melody here goes between the chest voice (lower voice) and head voice (higher voice) and alot of singers complain that, as they go from one to the other, there is a dramatic shift that sounds like a BREAK. Singers often also describe the lower voice as being a lot stronger than the higher voice or vice versa and this is what often causes said BREAK.

TREATMENT: We are using exercises that develop a mix (middle voice) which is a blend of the chest voice and the head voice so that, as we go from the bottom to the top of our range, there is a SMOOTH transition with no BREAKS. This is great for the performer because, if the voice breaks mid performance, it can be very embarrassing! This way the performer can focus on communicating the emotion they want to convey without the voice having a life of its own and doing things that we feel are out of our control!

We've just finished a great week of education in vocal technique with SLS Master Instructor, Spencer Welch! Students and SLS teachers travelled far and wide to experience one to one lessons, 'SLS - Application To Song' Masterclasses and Teacher Training with Spencer in Northwich, Cheshire. Spencer is a great communicator and has equipped us all with a new OR improved ability in vocal balance! We are all really excited to take this into the World and share it with others, making us all more relaxed yet effective performers!

'Oh my god! Thank goodness for Speech Level Singing! Just aced all my songs at rehearsal. Director was over the moon with me with me and everyody clapped. Hooray! Thanks for last Friday, it was a big help!' - JCSS Student via text....

This student has been cast as the Baker's Wife in an Amateur Dramatics production of 'Into The Woods'. With very little singing experience, she came to JCSS for some guidance approximately 6 months ago. After a month's break from lessons, she came to me frustrated and disheartened because of an unsuccessful rehearsal earlier last week. We were able to iron out most of her vocal issues and equip her with numerous tools to help counteract her nerves and produce smooth vocals. She was able to replicate the success of her lesson during the next rehearsal, well done!

JCSS Success @ Music Night!

Well done to JCSS students Jane Hardman, Yvonne Morton, Lara Bell, Philip Crank, Naomi and Hannah Jones for taking part in PCF's local music night on Saturday 9th April! The event was a huge success and JCSS sang backing vocals for Christina Aguilera's 'The Voice Within' and 'You Lost Me', alongside a professional band including a string section of musicians from the Philharmonic orchestra! All of the backing vocalists did a great job holding extremely complex harmonies and impacting two very powerful and atmospheric songs! Well done especially to Naomi Jones who sang lead vocals for 'You Lost Me'! At only 16 years old, she shows great promise as a future professional singer....Watch this space for our upcoming video of both performances!

Congratulations To JCSS Student, Lara Bell!

Lara Bell has been developing her vocal skills with JCSS for a year now. With next to no singing experience whatsoever, she is now playing the role of Lucy in an upcoming production of Jekyll and Hyde!

In addition to this, she has been offered a place on the BA (Hons) Acting Course at The Academy of Live and Recorded Arts (ALRA) in London, which she will start in September 2011! The audition was based on both an acting and vocal audition which she passed with flying colours...Well done, Lara!

Great LAMDA Results for student - Kelly Anne Scorah!

Since October I have been working with student Kelly Anne Scorah, helping her to prepare for her LAMDA exams which took place last month! She was examined on both her acting and vocal skills, and performed contrasting character songs 'Noone But You' from We Will Rock You and 'Wouldn't It Be Lovely' from My Fair Lady. Kelly Anne received an OUTSTANDING DISTINCTION, scoring a massive 92 out of 100 for her overall performance! Well Done, Kelly-Anne!

'True Colours' Session!

I've just done a 180 degree turn from teacher to learner in a session with JCSS student and fully accredited True Colors facilitator, Lisa Dickinson. When Lisa originally explained that True Colors is a structured system which allows you to explore different personality types, I realized how much her work ties into my own. Speech Level Singing is about improving the voice but it's also about working alongside the individual - understanding their personality type to meet their needs, in order to achieve their objectives and help them to grow in confidence! JCSS Student - Laura Walsh Accepted to Royal Academy of Dance Amongst Many Other Top Schools !

Laura started vocal lessons at JCSS in August 2010 with nearly no singing experience and, since then, has been accepted to all of the Dance schools that she has auditioned for! Each audition included a singing performance, as judges expect you to be good at all 3 aspects of performing arts - Dance, Drama and Music, when pursuing a career in such a competitive Industry!

Laura Walsh: "I wouldn't have got into any of the Dance schools without Jennifer's help. My singing lessons really helped me to build in confidence and develop an ecclectic repetoire of contemporary songs. The Speech Level Singing technique also helped me to resist the effects that nerves can have on your voice which was really useful!"

Chest Voice Is Your Friend!

Just taught a fantastic new student with bags of potential how to get into her lower voice - 'chest voice'! She says she has been struggling with it for years and by using chest driving vocal exercises, we've helped her find connection to it in less than 30 minutes. Great lesson.:-)
